Joining TasTESOL
Membership of the Tasmanian Teachers
of English to Speakers of Other Languages Association (TasTESOL) is
open to anyone with an interest in the TESOL field, including teachers,
home tutors, students, administrators and policy makers.
The membership year is January 1st to December 31st. Current members
are asked to renew their subscriptions after the AGM (usually in late
March/early April) and before November 1st. New members pay on joining,
but if they join in November or December they are deemed to have paid
for the following year.
Payment of the subscription entitles the member to free entry to all
TasTESOL meetings, including the state mini-conference, to a free
copy of each issue of the professional journal TESOL
in Context and to all the benefits of TasTESOL’s affiliation
with ACTA (the Australian Council of TESOL Associations) and ACTA’s
affiliation with TESOL International.

Support and Professional Development
Our general meetings are usually held on weekdays,
in the late afternoon. They are times of lively debate and the sharing
of knowledge and ideas on a topic of current interest, usually stimulated
by a panel of 2 or 3 speakers.
We have one statewide event a year – a Saturday Conference.
Until recently, this was in October, but it is now in March/April,
at the same time as the AGM. All meetings, including the conference,
are free to members, with non-members paying a small charge to cover
costs.
The committee also communicates with members by email, keeping them
informed of the organisation’s activities and of other issues
and developments in the field of ESOL.
A key resource for professional development is the national peer-reviewed
journal TESOL in Context, published by
the Australian Council of TESOL Associations (ACTA). Like our meetings,
this is free to members. There are usually two issues a year.
Advocacy
TasTESOL, through its membership
of ACTA, contributes to national responses to government consultation
processes on policies that might affect ESOL teachers and/or their
client groups. It also contributes to any other advocacy activities
ACTA undertakes.
The ACTA committee, on which Tas TESOL
is represented (link for ACTA) , decides which issues
to take up and invites its member associations to contribute their
views. Any TESOL association member, through their state association,
may suggest advocacy issues for the national TESOL community to address
through ACTA.
In 2006, ACTA became affiliated to TESOL International. For TasTESOL
members this means access to a wide
range of resources, people and news items (link for Tesol Internat)
from TESOL International’s 99 affiliates, via their newsletters
and e-bulletins.
